Sava of Serbia
   Serbian saint and monk who organized the Serbian church. At the request of his father, Stefan Nemanja (q.v.), he founded the Serbian monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos (qq.v.), where he lived as a monk before being consecrated in 1219 as the first archbishop (q.v.) of the church of Serbia (q.v.). He traveled widely, endowing other churches and monasteries in the Holy Land, Thessalonike, and Constantinople (qq.v.).
